My Heart's Desire

No man is content with just what he is doing. If he is, then he has stopped growing.

I have always been stage struck. I'm too old to begin to act now and too fat, but I want to write plays and to produce them. That's what I want to do and what I've always wanted to do. That's the whole story of my ambition.

I may be able to write plays and I may not. In order to learn more about writing and producing them I was one of a dozen people who put a little money into an organization which has just concluded a season and hopes to open another this Fall.

This organization produced three plays last season--"Blue Peter," Ibsen's "Rosmersholm," and W. S. Gilbert's "Engaged." My sole object in participating in this enterprise was to learn a little more about production.

I am planning to produce my own play, "The Dark Hours," myself independently. It was published in book form last year, and has been selling at an astonishing rate. If I can't write a play I can produce one anyway. I don't know whether or not I'll ever become a great dramatist--but I hope to. That is my definite aim.
